Rule by rule
| Rule | Amazon says | From the tool |
|---|---|---|
| Size | At least 500 pixels on the longest side and at most 10,000. With 1,000 or more, shoppers can zoom.1 | 1024 × 1024 |
| File | JPEG, TIFF, PNG or a GIF that does not move. JPEG is recommended.1 | JPG under 500 KB |
| Main image background | Pure white: RGB 255, 255, 255.13 | White |
| Product in the picture | The product shows as 85% of the main image.1 | 85% along its longest side |
| Whole product | All of the product inside the frame, with no part cut off.13 | Kept whole, centered |
| Text and logos | No text, logo, graphic or watermark on the main image.3 | Adds no border, text or watermark |
| Shape | The guide gives no shape or ratio. It limits the longest side.1 | Square, 1:1 |
Amazon does not say how it measures the 85%. The tool measures along the product’s longest side. Amazon also asks for JPEG files saved at high quality: the tool starts at quality 92 and lowers it only when a file would pass 500 KB.2
Still yours to check
The tool cannot retake a photo. These rules depend on the picture you start with.
- Show one unit of the product, once. Leave out props and accessories that do not come with it.1
- Take the product out of its packaging, unless the packaging is part of what you sell.13
- Start with a large, sharp photo. Amazon says not to enlarge small images, and blurred or pixelated ones can be removed. The tool has to enlarge a product that is small in your photo, so a small photo comes out soft.13
- Check your category. Shoes show a single shoe facing left at a 45-degree angle, and adult clothing is shown on a standing model.1
- Keep text, prices and Amazon logos or badges off every image.1
