Rule by rule
| Rule | eBay says | From the tool |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Photos in 1:1 or 16:9 generally look best.2 | 1:1 |
| Size | At least 500 pixels on the longest side. About 1600 × 1600 is recommended.12 | 1024 × 1024Smaller than the recommended 1600 × 1600. |
| File | JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC or AVIF, up to 12 MB each.2 | JPG under 500 KB |
| Background | White is generally best. A darker one can suit shiny items such as jewelry.2 | White |
| Whole item | The main photo shows the whole item, face-on.2 | Kept whole, centered |
| Borders, text, watermarks | No added borders, text, artwork or watermarks.1 | Adds no border, text or watermark |
The 500-pixel minimum and the ban on borders, text and watermarks are eBay policy. The rest is eBay’s advice for photos that sell.
Still yours to check
The tool cannot retake a photo. These rules depend on the picture you start with.
- Photograph the item face-on, and add close-ups of any flaws or scratches.2
- Use your own photos for used items. Stock photos are not allowed for used, damaged or defective items.1
- Show one item when you sell one. For a bundle, show everything in the main photo.2
- Add photos from several angles. A listing takes up to 24.2
eBay has its own background button
eBay’s listing form can swap a photo’s background for solid white, one photo at a time: select the photo, then the Background icon. This tool does up to 30 photos in one go and gives every one the same size and margin.2
